Turkish official to decide who stays and who leaves Greece!

Political uproar over matter

Newsroom March 13 09:48

The admission by Greek Alternate Minister for the Protection of Citizens Nikos Toskas, Saturday that a Turkish official will be responsible for deciding the readmission of refugees and immigrants entering Greece into Turkey has caused a political uproar. Toskas revealed that the Turkish official will be in charge of the readmission process of refugees and immigrants based on the agreement pending between Turkey and the EU over the refugee crisis and the deal between Greece and Turkey during PM Alexis Tsipras’s trip to Smyrna, Turkey last week. SYRIZA party MP, and colleague of Toskas, Michalis Michelogiannakis said in an interview on Greek television that he would not accept ‘a Turkish policeman’. Meanwhile, Greek Defence Minister Panos Kammenos called for the re-opening of the Amygdaleza detention centre for refugees and immigrants which had been shit down by the current administration as being against human rights. Toskas also revealed that the government was preparing a series of camps 20-25 kilometres the area of Idomeni. Main opposition party New Democracy called on the Greek government to immediately clarify its position on the placement of a Turkish official at such a sensitive post. ’Completely incompetent people govern Greece at the country’s most crucial time after 1974’, read ND statement. Meanwhile, Immigration Minister John Mouzalas welcomed the presence of Turkish observers on Greek island, claiming it was an international practice. ‘I hope he comes to the counting of refugees as an observer, because then Turkey will have no grounds to deny the increase of irregular migrants entering Greece’, he said. He added that relocating refugees from the camp at Idomeni would be difficult as most of the refugees hope to cross the borders to the north. In terms of the Greek state’s coordination on the whole refugee centres matter he likened it to the chaos when an earthquake hits and said it would eventually be taken care of.
