Incidents of violent clashes between ethnic groups of refugees and illegal immigrants are popping up throughout hotspots in Greece. Following the fights between Syrians and Afghanis at Idomeni in northern Greece and the port Piraeus in the south over the last two days, the hotspot on the island of Chios became the yet another location where a violent brawl broke out between refugees and migrants. According to local news site ‘politischios.gr’, groups of different ethnic background clashed for unknown reasons resulting in the stabbing of two people who were transferred to hospital. Others sustained serious head serious and leg injuries. The groups trashed the infrastructure at the reception center. Police attempted to contain the situation by entering the camp and firing off sound grenades. The local police in Chios have repeatedly requested the dispatch of two more riot police units to the island to help. Local residents have planned a protest at the island’s police station Friday morning. Meabwhile, NGO ‘Doctors Without Borders’ announced it would be leaving the island after the riots that resulted in the total destruction of the medical facility (30,000 Euros). The refugees attempted to storm the main entrance gate and march in protest about the living conditions and their objection to returning to Turkey. The Greek government is under immense pressure which is why it is trying to push through the immigration bill based on the recent EU-Turkey agreement on the refugee crisis.
