The west has seen a spite of deadly attacks on its cities by either Islamist groups like ISIS (Paris, Brussels), or lone terrorists inspired by ISIS like the one in San Bernardino in the US. In spite the clear link between the attacks and a distorted version of Islam, a common theme in the rhetoric used by US President Barack Obama in his statements after each and every attack was to avoid at all costs to associate the assaults in any way with the religion. A case in point is the recent visit of French President Francois Hollande to the US in a meeting with his US counterpart Barack Obama. The two heads of states met in Washington on Thursday to discuss ways the two countries could work together to defeat terrorism. The White House, however, insisted on its non use of the word Islamist, since it censored the phrase from the official White video of the meeting posted on its website. The remarks of ‘Islamist terrorism’ made by the French President in the video released by White House were muted.

This is the transcript of what Hollande said with strike-through notation to show what the White House censored in its video:

‘But we’re also well aware that the roots of terrorism, Islamist terrorism, is in Syria and in Iraq. We therefore have to act both in Syria and in Iraq, and this is what we’re doing within the framework of the coalition. And we note that Daesh is losing ground thanks to the strikes we’ve been able to launch with the coalition. We are continuing to support Iraq. This is also a decision we have taken, supporting the Iraqi government and making sure that they can claim back their entire territory, including Mosul’.
