According to Nielsen’s Consumer Confidence trend tracker, 84% of Greeks believe economic recession will continue into 2017, a 30% rise compared to last year. The data showed the consumer confidence index stood at 53 points in the 1st quarter of 2016, down by 12 points compared to last year’s respective period. 75% Greeks were worried about their personal finances, while 30% said they were unable to put money aside. The top concern for European citizens was that of terrorist attacks, followed by fears about the economy and job insecurity.

A noteworthy rise in the concerns of Greeks was that over migration, as 14% more Greeks considered it an issue bringing the total to 19%. On the contrary, there was a fall on health matters from 21% to 14%. 8 out of 10 Greek households responded they were trying to cut back on expenses by limiting entertainment, buying cheaper products and clothing expenses. The global consumer confidence index stood at 98 points, showing it is plateauing off for the past quarters.
