According to a report published in Deursch Welle, German holidaymakers stayed away from their traditional designations of Turkey, Egypt and north Africa due to terrorist attacks and political instability in the regions, opting for the safer countries of Greece and Spain, as well as Germany. The German consumer research company GfK noted a 7% drop in revenue for the country’s largest travel agencies at the end of this season’s summer period. Many Germans preferred to spend their holidays in Spain, Portugal and Germany, with Spain gaining the lions’ share from inbound German tourism, according to the Spanish Statistical Body that recorded 10 million visits of Germans only during the month of August. Greece also featured prominently in the travellers choices, as an upward trend was recorded, according to data from German Association of Travel Agents (DRV). “The tourist flows diverted from north Africa and the eastern Mediterranean towards the west”, the president of the Federal Association of the German Tourist Industry, Michael Frenzel noted.
