The medieval castle of Chios is one of the Aegean island’s attractions. Located adjacent to the main port of Chios and its east side borders with the sea, the castle consists of an inhabited area surrounded by a large stone wall structure with various fortifications aimed at protecting the population and houses from naval attacks and sieges by pirates and enemies during the middle ages.
The castle was built by the Byzantines in the medieval period starting in the 10th century by the Byzantines. The structures standing nowadays are part of later construction and expansion dated to the time when the Genoese, who maintained commercial concerns, ruled the island during the 14th to the 16th century.
