Tragedy strikes as 16 refugees drown off coast of Lesvos

The small boat sank between Greek and Turkish waters

16 people drowned off the coast of the Greek island of Lesvos, on the morning of Monday, when a refugee boat sank under unclear circumstances. A Swedish Frontex vessel initially spotted five bodies floating on the Aegean Sea, with 11 more bodies discovered as search and reduce operations of both Greek and Turkish coastguards were in full flight. According to a pregnant woman on board the vessel who was rescued by the Greek coastguard there was a total of 25 refugees on the small boat that had left the Turkish coasts and was headed to Greek waters. The Greek coastguard authorities announced 9 dead bodies had been retrieved from the waters, with one pregnant woman being rescued. One more person has been rescued, while sources say 7 of the bodies were pulled out of the sea by the Turkish coastguard as they had floated into Turkish sea waters.
