Skopje authorities start to tear down nationalistic statues

Statue of extreme right leader taken to abandoned factory

Newsroom February 22 12:50

Authorities in FYROM have started removing statues from centre of the country’s capital Skopje in the framework of ongoing talks between Greece and FYROM on the name dispute. The statues had been erected during the term of far-right PM Nikola Gruevski in his government’s efforts to push a nationalistic and expansionist ideology against Greece.
The municipal authorities took down the statue of extreme right VMRO member of the 19th century And on Yanev (Kyoset) from the Supreme Court entrance and transferred it to an abandoned factory.

The statue had been placed there as part of the implementation of the “Skopje 2014” programme, by the outgoing government of Nikola Gruevski.
Recently, the current government of FYROM decided to change the names of signs at the airport from “Alexander the Great” to “Skopje International Airport” and the large motorway, from “Alexander the Great” to “Friendship Road”.
