The Athens Transit System (OASA) will be closing all gates at the Syntagma Square metro station on Friday as part of its trial period, incuding the gates designated for the special needs citizens.
Four stations are scheduled to shut down on Thursday, while anther four will close on Friday. As the Athens News Agency reports, the test run of closing metro station gates shows that the transitioning from the old public transport system to the new digital era has enterd its final phase.
The initial results of implementing e-tickets, following the gradual closure of the gates, are encouraging, as OASA revenues exceeded 17% in March compared with the corresponding month last year (with an increase in April), while the number of personalised cards has surpassed 700,000.
Commuters using public transport are advised to obtain a valid e-ticket in time, as an increasing number of Metro station gates will be closing over the next period.
