Three fire fronts are raging on the island of Kefalonia with strong winds of up to 10 Beaufort hampering efforts to put the flames out. Four fire engines with 12 crew members are trying to quench the blaze, while a helicopter is also in the air aiding in the operation.
Speaking to Athens News Agency the vice-prefect of Kefalonia, Panagis Drakoulogonas, described the “chaotic situation” and said that “with the help of the police we evacuated the village of Ano Katelio, we informed the inhabitants that they were heading for the beach”. “If there are no water drops from the air before the sun sets, then we expect a nightmarish night,” he said.
Authorities evacuated the residents of Ano Katelio, while police removed elderly people from their homes who were unable to move. So far no burned home or injuries have been reported.
