Floods have caused major damage to many parts of Greece due to the extreme rainfall and bad weather that has descended on the mainland for the last 24 hours.
This has resulted to local authorities being declared in a sate of emergency in Skiathos, Skopelos, South Pelion, Xanthi and Zagora will be declared a state of emergency.
In Skopelos, mainly in the western part of the island, the storm was severe overnight, lasting about 5 hours and mainly affected Glossa, Loutraki, Elios, but also Chora. The height of the rainwater, according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) , reached 67mm.
The Municipality of South Pelion was hit by the severe weather at midnight on Saturday, for about four hours, and the roads in the towns and villages were covered in rushing waters.
Special land machines have been trying to open up access to some local roads covered in mud and rocks due to partial landslides, while also attempting to restore the water supply which was damaged.
More rains and high winds are forecast by the HNMS for Tuesday nationwide.
