Following the vaccination of the health workers, who were the first to get the Covid-19 vaccine starting on December 27 in nine major public hospitals in the country, their colleagues in the entire health system, both in National Health System (NHS) and private health sector will take their turn, as well as the guests of the approximately 350 Elderly Care Units, private and NGOs, and their employees.
As of today, 42 NHS hospitals across the country will be included in the vaccination operation (19 hospitals in Attica, 12 in Macedonia and Thrace, 3 hospitals in Central Greece and Thessaly, 6 in Epirus and the Peloponnese, and 2 in Crete) and 5 military hospitals. At the same time, the Mobile Units of the Hellenic National Organization of Public Health (EODY) will start the vaccination at the Elderly Health Care Units MFI, to the 20,000 elderly people who are hosted in nursing homes.
According to the estimates of the Ministry of Health, within the next 16 days, it is expected that about 100,000 people, in the healthcare sector and elderly, will have been vaccinated.
As of yesterday, 3,779 vaccinations had been carried out in nine hospitals of the country, as announced by the Secretary-General of Primary Health Care (PHC), and head of the Business Planning of vaccination coverage of the population, Marios Themistos.
In total, the health workers in the NHS are 123,500 and 15,000 are the workers in the welfare services, chronic diseases, etc. According to the leadership of the Ministry of Health, the response of the health workers is encouraging – estimated at 50-60% – with the medical staff having stated their consent to be vaccinated.
Vaccinations will start in another 55 hospitals during the week, specifically on Friday, January 8, and next week the supply will be completed in 19 hospitals of the island country.
Approximately 20,000 elderly people who are hosted at nursing homes are at high risk, which is why the National Vaccination Committee has placed them high on the vaccination plan along with the health workers at the NHS. In recent months, especially since the summer, the elderly living in these structures have been disproportionately affected by the epidemic. At least two hundred are estimated to have died from coronavirus infection and serious illness.
