Investigation underway after Greek F-16 jet destroyed on the runway

Damage in the braking system is being put forward as an explanation

Newsroom November 19 10:25

An F-16 fighter jet of the Hellenic Air Force was completely destroyed at Andravida airport on Thursday after its engine caught fire while it was in the landing phase, on the runway of the military airport.

The pilot, using the ejection seat, managed to free himself from the burning F-16 and is safe. The fighter jet was returning to base after a training flight. The F-16 Block 52+ is one of the most modern aircraft of the Air Force.

According to the initial estimates, the veering off of the single-seater fighter F-16 Block 52+ from the runway of Andravida airport is due to possible damage to the brakes or worn tires, resulting in its complete destruction. At the same time, the possibility of the aircraft deviating from its course due to the slippery runway due because of bad weather conditions prevailing in the area is also being seriously considered.
