The male whale, which was named “Sotiris” by its rescuers, was found last Friday injured in shallow water in Alimos.
The young whale (Ziphius cavirostris) was located by the Port Authority of Salamis.
Specifically, a boat of the Hellenic Navy, which for the last 24 hours carried out patrols around the island of Salamis in consultation with the political leadership of the Ministry of Environment and Energy to monitor and possible resurgence of the Sotiris, located the marine mammal.
The whale had appeared last Friday in Alimos, where it was found to be injured. There, an overnight effort was made by veterinarians to keep it alive and it was given special treatment.
According to the results of the clinical examination and the first hematological examinations, the whale’s health condition was considered critical, pending the results of virological and other specialized examinations by the Veterinary School of AUTh.
The mammal was given supportive treatment with fluids, electrolytes as well as appropriate medication, and taken to the open sea to return to its natural environment, reviving hopes that it would eventually survive.
Unfortunately the next morning, last Saturday, January 29, it was found again in the shallows of Selinia bay in Salamina and this morning the sea whale was found dead.
