Meta is threatening to withdraw Facebook and Instagram from Europe if it is not allowed to continue storing and transferring users’ personal data to the US.
European regulators are currently revising data transfer regulations, as the previous agreement reached with the US (Privacy Shield) was declared invalid by the European Court of Justice in July 2020.
In its annual report released on Thursday, the tech giant said that unless new data storage and transfer agreements are reached, then “it will probably not be able to offer significant products and services, including Facebook and Instagram, in Europe.”
