French elections: Macron the first president to be re-elected in 20 years

Le Pen: I will be the leader in the fight against Macron in the parliamentary elections

Newsroom April 24 09:51

Emanuel Macron is elected President of the French Republic for the second time in a row, as shown by the results of the exit polls.

The French president secures his stay in power for another five years with a big victory, as he wins 58% of the votes.

Macron led by 16 points to right-wing candidate Marin Le Pen, who appears to have received 42% of the votes, a percentage slightly less than her staff expected.

In any case, Emanuel Macron becomes the first president to be re-elected in 20 years. The last time was in 2002, when Jacques Chirac was re-elected, defeating Marin Le Pen’s father, Jean-Marie Le Pen.

Le Pen: I will be the leader in the fight against Macron in the parliamentary elections

“The great battle for the parliamentary elections in France starts today. I will be the leader in this battle against Emanuel Macron. The ‘National Rally’ will do everything to punish all those who gather around Macron and we will be everywhere, in the metropolis, the offshore areas and we will need all your forces from June 12”, she stressed.

“After two weeks of great struggle, the ideas we represent reached here and finally we got 42%, a result that is a great success for us. Millions of our compatriots voted for us. I am grateful to all those who voted for me in the first round but also to those who rallied with us in the second round”, said the French politician.

Marin Le Pen expressed satisfaction with the result, which “is a testament to a great success, a voice of the French for a great change that they will have to wait for”.

She commented that “today Macron was given great power. But as an opposition we have a very strong force. I am afraid today that the next term will continue the same and will do nothing for what divides the country”, she said, stating that she will keep fighting. After all, she said, she recorded a historic percentage in the elections and a huge success that she will use to win the parliamentary elections.
