The meeting of the envoys of the European Union member states for the 6th package of sanctions against Russia, which includes an embargo on Russian oil, ended without an agreement. According to Reuters, citing an official familiar with the talks, the “27” are expected to talk again on Thursday.

The European Commission earlier on Wednesday proposed a gradual embargo on Russian oil. According to the proposal, Hungary and Slovakia would be given a longer adjustment period, from six months to the embargo until the end of 2023.

The EU envoys had their first debate on the plan on Wednesday. However, there was no official support for the plan, as some countries expressed concerns about the measures, said the source, who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the issue. Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Bulgaria have expressed concerns about the oil embargo, the source said, noting, however, that an agreement could be reached at a new meeting of the envoys on Thursday.

Hungary and Slovakia have publicly expressed concerns about the oil embargo, with Slovakia saying Wednesday it wants a longer transition period to break free from Russian oil, at least three years.
