The recapture of a part of Skyros by Greek and US marines, which had previously been occupied by enemy forces, was part of the impressive joint Greek-US military exercise in the framework of the Interdisciplinary Exercise “Alexander the Great-22”.
The Interdisciplinary Exercise “ALEXANDER THE GREAT-22” is in full swing, with the participation of the US Army, which started on May 2 and is scheduled to end on 29 May 2022 in the area between the Pagasitic Gulf to Agios Efstratios and Lemnos, with the participation of personnel and means of the Greek and American Armed Forces.
The Day of Distinguished Visitors in Skyros was attended by the Commander of the 1st Infantry Division, Lieutenant-General Paris Kapravelos, the US Military Attaché to Greece, Colonel Nathan Mann, as well as observers from Egypt.
Officers, NCOs (noncommissioned officers), and Infantry of the newly formed Special Warfare Command of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (HNDGS) participated in the exercise which provides for the formation of Marine forces and Special Operations Teams from all its Units and is accompanied by a Rapid-Ship (PTM) and a Landing Ships of the Hellenic Navy, personnel and means of the Air Force and the Army Air Force.
The US presence included the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion (RECON BN), as well as the USS ARLINGTON Warship, whose mission is the support of Special Operations.
During DV-DAY and as a culmination of intensive training in the framework of the planning of (HNDGS), a part of the island, which had been previously occupied by enemy forces, was recaptured, with an amphibious operation of Units of 32 TAX PZN in combination with airborne operations, with parallel execution of Search and Rescue Battle events and parachute drops.
All scenarios of “ALEXANDER THE GREAT-22” aim to enhance the synergy of the Greek and American Armed Forces, as well as increase the readiness, combat capability and level of understanding of the participants to improve their interoperability.
