Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the Greek-Bulgarian IGB natural gas pipeline as a decisive energy bridge, important for Greece, Bulgaria, the Balkans, and Europe, during his speech a little while ago, at the opening ceremony in the industrial area of ​​Komotini.

“Today is a very important moment for Komotini, for Greece, and for Bulgaria. It is, however, an important moment for the entire Balkans for the whole of Europe. Because here in a little while we will not just inaugurate a natural gas pipeline but a decisive energy bridge that unites the geographical south with the north, bringing Greece and Bulgaria, Athens and Sofia closer in the first phase, and this importance of the pipeline for these two friendly countries is indicated by the presence of the Prime Minister of Bulgaria Kiril Petkov with us today,” said Mr. Mitsotakis.

The operation of the Greek-Bulgarian natural gas pipeline IGB will change the map of the region, give new dynamic cooperation and an end to the Russian monopoly, giving access to different sources of energy, emphasized the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Kirill Petkov, during his speech at the opening ceremony of the pipeline.

The Hellenic-Bulgarian Interconnector Pipeline (IGB) Project consists of a pipeline approximately 182 km long (of which approximately 31 km are within Greek territory), as well as the necessary supporting facilities (Measuring Stations, stations, Operation Center).

With a starting point in Komotini, the pipeline will end in Stara Zagora respectively, connecting the Natural Gas networks of Greece and Bulgaria, while there will be the possibility of reverse flow. Its interconnection with the TAP pipeline is also envisaged. The IGB pipeline has an initial capacity of 3 billion cubic meters of natural gas (bcm) per year, with the possibility of increasing it to 5 billion cubic meters of gas. annually with the construction of a Compression Station.

The opening of the pipeline took place on Friday (8/7), in Komotini, where the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Kiril Petkov, were present.
