After a thrilling final in Qatar, Argentina was crowned World Champions for the 3rd time in their history, after beating reigning title holders France in the World Cup Final on Sunday afternoon in a penalty shootout. Messi opened the score in the 23rd minute from the penalty spot, while Di Maria scored the second goal in the 36th minute. France equalised with goals by Mbappe (80′, 81′) taking the match to extra time. Messi again in the 108th minute gave the Latin American team the lead but Mbappe made it 3-3 with a penalty kick in the 118th minute.
In the penalty shootout, the Argentinian goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez blocked 2 shots, while a 3rd French kick went wide. The Argentines scored all of their four penalties, giving them the victory 4-2.
