EU and US warn citizens of possible attacks on their embassies in Ankara-Constantinople (Istanbul)

Turkey, for its part, has warned its citizens of attacks in Europe and the United States

Newsroom February 1 06:04

Germany’s consulate in Constantinople (Istanbul) will remain closed today due to an increased threat of an attack in Turkey’s largest city, the German Foreign Ministry announced.

Germany has warned its citizens in Constantinople that the risk of attack is particularly high in the central Beyoğlu district and around Taksim Square.

The ministry said the move to close the consulate was made after an “assessment by the security authorities” and called on German citizens to be especially careful and avoid places where there are large crowds.

The Swedish embassy in Ankara and the consulate in Constantinople also remain closed to the public, the Swedish foreign ministry told the German news agency (dpa). Similarly, the British consulate is not open to the public, according to a travel advisory.

Germany, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, as well as the US, had already warned their citizens last week of an increased risk of attack in Turkey. The US on Monday updated its warning to specifically mention Constantinople.
