Farmers’ meeting in Nikaia: Proposal to block highways and descend on Athens

Farmers advocate city actions and prime ministerial dialogue, government insists on open roads

Newsroom February 6 02:05

Farmers propose actions in cities and call for a meeting with the Prime Minister – The nationwide meeting of farmers is underway – The government is ready for dialogue but on the condition of open roads.

Blocking highways, actions inside major cities, a descent to Athens with a demonstration and a meeting with the Prime Minister is the basic proposal expressed by almost all farmers participating in the meeting held at the Cultural Center of Nikaia in Larissa.

Farmers are also considering blocking the Isthmus in Athens and closing customs offices.

The meeting, attended by 50 blockades from 70 farmers’ associations, is about the future of the farmers’ mobilizations, following the call made last week to representatives of all blockades around the country following last Saturday’s rally at Agrotica.

At the same time, shortly before the Larissa meeting, Economy Minister Kostis Hatzidakis said the government is open to discussion with farmers – in the wake of Mitsotakis’ statements to reporters yesterday – stressing, however, that any consultation should be done within the framework of the economy’s capabilities.

At the same time, government sources make it clear that the government is willing to discuss, but not under the threat of road closures, noting at the same time that farmers need to take certain decisions, such as getting an organisational structure, because so far there is not even a coordinating committee.

In their proposals for today’s crucial meeting, the farmers plan to continue their mobilizations by blocking the highways and the Isthmus of Corinth, a descent to Athens with tractors and a demonstration outside the Parliament, the closure of major customs (tractors are already lined up at the border station of Nikis, in Florina), but also “invasions” for actions with agricultural machinery in the centers of the country’s largest cities.

“The demands we are asserting in each prefecture are condensed into a single demand: We claim our survival as farmers, to remain in our villages and our crops,” says the Panhellenic Committee of Blockades.
