OAKA stadium is safe without the polycarbonate sheets of the Kalatrava roof – Coldplay concert will go on as planned

After the removal of the polycarbonate sheets, the problems of wear and tear due to the aging of the materials are reduced to a minimum, according to the 3rd report of the Technical Inspectorate for OAKA

Newsroom February 23 08:49

The Technical Chamber of Greece, after completing a thorough study of the Athens Olympic Stadium and specifically the Kalatrava ‘roof’, has concluded the 3rd in a series of expert reports.

According to this report, OAKA stadium is considered to be safe for the public and can host the organisation of events without any cause for concern.

As it was announced a few months ago, the 3rd report of the ‘TEEE’ would be the decisive one for the assessment of the situation of the Olympic Stadium, following previous reports on problems of staticity, danger, etc.

However, with the notable difference of the removal of the polycarbonate sheets from the outer surface of the twin “Kalatrava roof”, the problems of deterioration due to ageing of the materials are reduced to a minimum.

In this way, OAKA can operate normally, although it will be in a repair and restoration phase for a considerable period of time.

More specifically, the removal of the polycarbonate sheets will be completed, as planned, by mid-April 2024.

At the same time, based on the instructions given by the experts of the Technical Inspection Authority, an instrumental monitoring system of the Kalatrava roof is to be installed, using state-of-the-art equipment, in a “digital twin” configuration, a method considered state of the art.

Thanks to this system, the behaviour of the building will be monitored continuously and in real time, so that if any noticeable change is detected, there will be immediate information and on-the-spot intervention to solve the problem.

Based on all the foregoing, it is clear that the 3rd expert report of the TEE confirms a recent statement by the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, to hold the double Coldplay concert on 8 and 9 June 2024.

Tickets for which have long since sold out, with a large proportion of them being sold outside Greece.
