All of the rescued are accommodated in a building of the Chania Port Fund

Newsroom February 26 03:35

A major operation by the Coast Guard resulted in the rescue of 114 immigrants south of Gavdos.

Specifically, the Port Authority of Agia Galini yesterday at noon was informed by the Integrated Search and Rescue Coordination Center of the Headquarters of the Coast Guard-Hellenic Coast Guard that the cargo ship “Celsius London” flagged Marshall Islands spotted and rescued 114 immigrants in the sea area 40 nautical miles south of Gavdos.

The cargo ship sailed to the sea area of Messara Bay, where 105 of the immigrants were transferred to a rescue boat of the Coast Guard and safely transported to the port of Agia Galini.

They were then transferred to Chania, with the assistance of members of the Special Missions Unit of the Port Authority of Chania.

Due to adverse weather conditions, the transfer process was interrupted and the cargo ship sailed to the bay of Souda, where a Coast Guard Patrol Boat received and safely disembarked the remaining 9 immigrants.

All of the rescued are being accommodated in a building of the Chania Port Fund.

Preliminary investigation conducted by the Central Port Authority of Chania.
