A young man was sentenced by the Thessaloniki Trial Court for urging a 17-year-old girl to cause the amputation of her genitals with a knife and, under the threat of publishing nude photographs he illegally possessed, he forced her to self-harm with a sharp object, carving the words “Sorry” and “Truth” on her body.

The unprecedented case was dealt with by the Thessaloniki Trial Court, which imposed a total prison sentence of 2 years on the 23-year-old defendant.

The judges ordered the serving of part of the above sentence, namely for 3 months, while the rest was suspended.

The convicted man did not appear in court nor was he represented by a lawyer. The case was reported in early 2021 by the mother of the victim.

She had noticed changes in the previous period in the behavior of her 17-year-old daughter, while the drop that made the glass overflow was when the minor addressed to her mother and asked for help to end the nightmare she was experiencing, revealing that she was receiving threats to her life and that is why she attempted to commit suicide.

The chronicle – How it all started

It all seems to have started in the summer of 2017, when the minor met the perpetrator through their mutual friends.

A few months later, as he claimed in the communication he had with the girl, the young man left abroad with his parents.

Their communication continued with an exchange of messages via an online application and seems to have developed into a flirtation.

According to what is described in the case file, however, the young man demanded to have complete control over the student’s movements, claiming exclusivity in her life.

He demanded to know where and with whom she went out, and controlled her clothing choices.

Exercising verbal and psychological violence against her, he made her feel not only bad but also guilty when her choices did not conform to his “wants”.

The girl seemed unable to bear this control, this oppression and turned to a psychologist. He, on the other hand, claimed that only he could help her and that he had rich feelings for her, trapping her mentally and emotionally.

There were more than a few times when the girl wanted to break up with him, but then the perpetrator threatened her that he would publish personal photos he had taken without her knowledge and consent, and to blackmail her he asked her to carve and burn parts of her body.

In February 2021, he reportedly tried to persuade her to put a knife in her genital area and twist it to cause amputation, with the minor refusing.

At the same time, he forced her to injure her body with a knife by carving the words “Sorry” and “Truth” on her left leg and her left arm.

Using the same threats of publishing nude photos, he forced her to reveal the passwords to her social media profiles, which he used to delete an account.

The court found him guilty of ‘attempted genital mutilation of a woman’, ‘unlawful processing of personal data’ and ‘unlawful violence’ (the last two acts being repeated).
