The Municipality of Almyros, within which there are three underwater antiquities in Kikynthos, Glaros, and Telegraphos, will attempt to create Greece’s first Artificial Underwater Attraction, one and a half miles away from the last point of the underwater antiquity of Telegraph, in an area designated by the responsible consultants.
Within this underwater area, the mythological and historical journey of the region will be exhibited, while there will be sculptural artworks inspired by the rich mythological and cultural heritage of our area, featuring the Gods of Olympus as well as the local Homeric heroes (Achilles, Diomedes, Iolaus).
The Municipality of Almyros will create a free artificial underwater attraction. The sea area needed for such an attraction is relatively small. The sculptural artworks will weigh 3-5 tons and will be submerged at a depth of 12 to 15 meters in the marine area of Pteleos-Achilleion, with their construction undertaken by the School of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
As the Mayor mentioned, it is a project that, when completed, will give a tremendous boost to the tourist development of the Almyros region since there are 3 to 4 million citizens in Europe engaged in diving tourism.

Moreover, diving activities belong to environmentally friendly actions and promote sustainable development, unlike some forms of mass tourism, as the Underwater Attraction area enriches neighboring fishing grounds.
However, the most important aspect is the enhancement of social cohesion achieved by fostering collaborations among different professional sectors, opening the market to new tourist activities, increasing job opportunities in the tourism sector, and attracting scientists and researchers from the University of Thessaly.
Certainly, it is a challenging project, but the Municipality of Almyros is ready to take all necessary actions to implement this visionary development and promotion plan for the region.
