Kasselakis: I am religious, it’s not negative for someone to believe in miracles

The president of SYRIZA claims he is a leader, he enjoys an occasional lager and is close to Tsipras' - His take on European elections, Papanotas, and the possibility of having children

Newsroom April 26 02:50

Stefanos Kasselakis, head of the opposition, discussed SYRIZA’s Progressive Alliance leading in the European elections and outlined his vision for an eight-year term in office, focusing on personnel renewal and reforms. He expressed aspirations to serve as Prime Minister for two terms, aiming to decentralise Greece, address demographic challenges, and avoid future economic crises. Kasselakis emphasised his pragmatic approach to politics, advocating for pan-European ballots and reforms within the European Parliament. Despite fluctuations in polls, he remained optimistic about SYRIZA’s prospects, highlighting the importance of pursuing achievable goals with integrity.

Clear “no” to support for Israel

Mr. Kasselakis emphasised the party’s stance on Israel, advocating for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and condemning terrorist attacks. He dismissed criticism of lacking support for Israel, highlighting their condemnation of attacks, including those from Iran. Kasselakis differentiated between Iran’s actions and the humanitarian crisis in Palestine, condemning the bloodshed and uncertainty faced by its people. When questioned about the perception of no support for Israel, he reiterated their clear condemnation of terrorist attacks.

Structural and organisational mutation

Called upon to comment on the issue of SYRIZA’s mutation he commented by saying to take a look at the political field and obverse that everyone is fighting against SYRIZA. With regards to the removal of Dimitris Papanotas from the European ballot, he stated  he made a decision that was absolutely consistent with his values.

Papanotas issue closed

The President of SYRIZA PS, Mr. Kasselakis, stated that he considers the issue regarding Mr. Papanotas closed, refraining from further comments on. He identified himself as both a leader and someone who enjoys an occasional lager, emphasising the transparency of his lifestyle. He discussed a potential political cleansing if their goals are achieved, aiming for a more direct and meritocratic political culture. Regarding Papanotas’ matter, he clarified that there was no internal disagreement. In response to patriotism-related discussions, he criticised the slogan “country, religion, family,” associating it with the junta’s regime and highlighting its historical significance in the struggle for freedom in Greece.

End of stereotypes

The President of SYRIZA PS declared himself a believer and emphasised the importance of respecting the religion of all individuals while advocating for distinct roles and regulation between the state and the church. He clarified that his personal beliefs can coexist with his respect for others’ beliefs, rejecting the stereotype that SYRIZA opposes tradition and calling for an end to this misconception.

The Miracle

Mr. Kasselakis discussed the “miracle” at his baptism, clarifying that he didn’t claim it himself but believes it’s acceptable to believe in miracles as long as it aligns with ethical principles. He expressed a philosophical view that acknowledges the existence of unknown phenomena and respects both nature and God, while also endorsing scientific understanding. He emphasised the importance of addressing everyday challenges rather than dwelling on unexplained phenomena. Additionally, the President of SYRIZA is set to visit Corfu ahead of Easter, affirming his tradition of celebrating Greek Easter.

Kasselakis expressed deep respect for Tsipras’s tenure as prime minister and highlighted the achievements of the SYRIZA government. Looking ahead, he assured that under their governance people could sleep peacefully.

Regarding future ministerial appointments, Kasselakis indicated a preference for individuals with credentials from various sectors. He announced Evangelos Apostolakis as the Minister of Defense. Addressing questions about his financial situation, Kasselakis asserted his integrity, stating that he hadn’t earned anything from his political position. He debunked allegations about his financial assets, asserting transparency and dismissing claims propagated by opposing parties. Kasselakis concluded by reaffirming his commitment to integrity and expressing his disillusionment with the political system’s internal workings, noting its perceived dirtiness. Despite this, he remained steadfast in his principles, asserting that his origins remained unchanged.

Lessons and tactics

Stefanos Kasselakis emphasised personal growth, noting the need for patience and conciliation. He hailed his decision to run for the leadership of SYRIZA PS as his best yet and acknowledged making tactical rather than strategic errors. Reflecting on his conduct, he expressed pride in avoiding blunders that might offend people and stressed the importance of aligning his words with his values. Regarding his marriage and personal challenges within the party, he highlighted the initial difficulty and the pressure he faced. Kasselakis discussed his domestic life and aspirations for children, emphasising a cautious approach. He asserted financial independence, noting he lacks party income and does not seek luxury. His decision to embark on this political journey symbolises a new phase in his life
