Meeting Biden – Erdogan: Will take place May 9, says Bloomberg, the White House has not confirmed

The landscape is murky for the face-to-face meeting between the two leaders

Newsroom April 26 12:25

A cloud of uncertainty shrouds Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s anticipated visit to Washington to meet with Joe Biden at the White House. Despite initial indications pointing to a meeting scheduled for May 9, recent reports have cast doubt on whether it will indeed take place.

As the purported meeting date approaches, conflicting information emerges. While a Bloomberg report suggests that the meeting will proceed as planned on May 9, statements from White House National Security spokesperson John Kirby, made just hours ago to accredited journalists, indicate that Turkish President Erdogan’s visit is not listed on President Joe Biden’s agenda.

Specifically asked whether Erdogan’s meeting with Haniyeh would be a topic at the meeting with Biden or if it would jeopardise the Turkish president’s visit, Kirby replied, “There is nothing on the agenda to discuss regarding a specific visit by President Erdogan. So, I have no comment on that.”

When asked about “the hosting the Hamas leader,” Kirby said, “Again, I’ll leave it to President Erdogan. We’ve been very clear about our position on Hamas and who they are and what they represent. I’ll leave it at that.”

Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported that May 9th’s  meeting at the White House will take place, highlighting Erdogan’s impending visit to Washington occurs as the Israel-Hamas war continues in Gaza and after Iran and Israel attack generating fears in the wider Middle East.
