Cyprus responds to Nasrallah’s statements: The migration issue concerns us, but it is primarily a European problem

The leader of Hezbollah urged the Lebanese authorities to allow Syrian refugees to travel to Cyprus

Newsroom May 14 03:50

The Cypriot government is concerned about the call from Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah to the Lebanese authorities to allow Syrian refugees to travel to Cyprus. Cypriot government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that this is a message “which certainly should concern us and is an issue that we prioritize highly.”

He noted that from the outset, the Republic of Cyprus has raised the issue of increased migration flows to the EU, emphasizing that it is primarily a European issue because, as Nasrallah stated, Cyprus is the closest EU member state, and this is a fact.

Mr. Letymbiotis reminded that President Christodoulides “had timely taken the initiative and, together with the President of the European Commission, had visited Lebanon a few weeks ago to present this package of economic assistance which, among other things, includes support to contain migration flows from Lebanon to Europe and particularly to Cyprus.”

Nicosia, the Cypriot government spokesman concluded, is in contact with the Lebanese authorities and believes that through these contacts, it will be able to manage the situation.
