Irini Baroulaki, who was the oldest woman in the country, died on Tuesday night (15.6.2024) at the age of 119.
As reported by zarpanews.gr, Irini Baroulaki lived all her life in Paidochori in the municipality of Apokoronas in Chania.
A statement on her death was issued by the municipality of Apokoronas, emphasising the principles with which she grew up and passed on to her children, who were by her side until the end.
The Municipality of Apokoronas said in its statement:
“We respectfully bid farewell to the oldest person in our country, Irini Baroulakis, who passed away from earthly life at the age of 119. The deceased was born, raised a family and lived throughout her life in our municipality, in Paidochori Apokoronas.
Her way of life and her virtues are models for us and an example to follow.
We express our condolences to her relatives and may the soil of Apokoroniotiki land be light to welcome her.
Eternal her memory”.
She had undergone hip surgery:
Some time ago, Irini Baroulaki had undergone hip surgery at the Chania Hospital. The operation had gone well and she had returned home to her children and grandchildren.

Who was Irini Baroulaki:
Irini Baroulaki, as reported by haniotikanea.gr, was the second child of a large family with four girls and two boys. Her genes were good. Her father had died at the age of 107 and her mother had reached the age of 100.
Her marriage took place in 1939, to Spyros Baroulakis of Stylianos, who had been born in 1911. According to her children, herself and Lefteris Georgoudakis (Ramniotis), the bride was older than the groom by five years and they commented that she would have no children.
However, she had five children, three boys and two girls. She raised them with the hardships and poverty of that time and with her husband’s small disability pension.
He was an Albanian invalid, having had the toes of one of his feet amputated from frostbite. He restored them with the conditions and privations of that time, working as a reaper and harvester.
