Student elections: Polls are open – Student voting trends

The PKS should not downsize student elections and respect students' vote, said representative of DAP-NDFK to protothema.gr

Newsroom May 22 12:51

The polling stations for this year’s student elections opened at 7 am without issues, with voting set to conclude at 7 pm unless otherwise specified by student unions. To ensure a smooth election process and facilitate student participation, the student cross-party council decided that no classes will be held today. Classes will resume after the vote counting is completed.

Student voting trends

– Students must present a police ID, passport, or driver’s license to vote.
– Voting with a student ID alone is not allowed.
– If a student lacks the necessary documents, they can vote with a certificate from their department’s administration, verified against their student record.

Polling station locations must be announced by the Student Union Board about two days before the elections. Kyriazis Sotiriou, Secretary of DAP-NDFK, discussed the election process and its integrity with protothema.gr. He criticized Panspoudastiki K.S. (P.K.S.) for proposing to move a ballot box due to an educational trip during the elections. Similar tactics by P.K.S. were noted at DI.PA.E., where they held elections earlier, urging students to vote either Panspoudastiki or blank, carrying the ballot box door-to-door. Sotiriou condemned these practices and called on P.K.S. to respect the student elections and votes.

Regarding the impact of the new higher education law, Sotiriou commented that the law, a long-standing proposal from DAP since 1987, allows students to study in Greece without leaving the country. This law aligns Greece educationally with the rest of the world and strengthens public universities. Despite DAP-NDFK’s efforts to ensure academic normalcy, leftist factions illegally closed schools, disrupting exams and daily student life. Sotiriou believes that the silent majority and real students will respond strongly to these practices, aiming for DAP-NDFK to continue improving public universities
