Coldplay: The Band That Took OAKA by Storm – See Photos

Coldplay exceeded all expectations with a sensational show that had everything – stunning sci-fi effects, high-profile guest appearances, and an infectious energy that sold out their June 8th and 9th shows

Newsroom June 9 11:17

Countless LED wristbands, colorful earth-shaped balloons, and impressive sparklers made our night unforgettable. On the eve of the elections, Coldplay’s spectacular show at OAKA, a concert that sold out within hours of its announcement, was possibly the biggest concert event of the year.

As part of their “Music of the Spheres” world tour, Coldplay’s appearance in Athens attracted spectators from around the globe for their shows on June 8th and 9th. The concert exceeded expectations, featuring blockbuster characteristics and thrilling moments. Chris Martin, recalling his early years, played the piano with imagination and expressiveness, while new fans cheered every time the lights from the wristbands changed formations in sync with the music, even if they couldn’t memorize the lyrics.

Generations converged at this grand event, one of the biggest parties in the world, honored by political leaders: Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, along with his wife Mareva Grabovski, and opposition leader Stefanos Kasselakis with his partner Tyler Macbeth, attended on election eve, underscoring the concert’s significance. As Chris Martin noted on stage, only music can bridge divides and bring people closer together.

The audience gave standing ovations to Antonia Kaouris and Maisie Peters, who declared her lifelong dream of performing with Coldplay was fulfilled. The stage shook when, accompanied by the E.T. theme, the band—Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Johnny Buckland, and Will Champion—took the stage. United by shared values, the band emphasized reducing the concert’s environmental footprint and reminded us of the importance of making our lives better.

Chris Martin’s constant play of illusions, impeccable stage presence, and stunning spectacle, all while wearing a simple tie-dye T-shirt, captivated the audience. Speaking in Greek, he expressed gratitude for the honor of performing in Greece and thanked the thousands who came from different countries, addressing Palestine and Israel simultaneously with a call for peace.

The concert, with the motto “We want a world without wars in peace,” delighted both longtime and newer fans. Highlights included the emotional performance of “Higher Power” and “Adventure of a Lifetime,” with balls bouncing through the crowd, and “Paradise,” featuring an extended introduction that engaged the audience as active participants.

A touching moment occurred when Martin invited two sisters on stage, one of whom had just been released from the hospital. Together, they sang “Everyday Life,” representing the audience and sending the message that despite life’s hardships, Coldplay is here to make things better. The show culminated with the beloved “Viva La Vida,” which brought the entire stadium to its feet, lighting up the LEDs in red, blue, and white.
