Evia: “Drowned” in tents one of the most beautiful beaches of the island – See photo

Concern over free camping on the famous Thapsas beach, known as the "Blue Lake

Newsroom June 26 11:39

Concern seems to have been raised in Evia by the number of campers who chose to do free camping over the long weekend on one of the island’s most beautiful beaches.

A photo making rounds on the internet shows Thapsas beach in the municipality of Kimi Aliveri (also known as “Blue Lake”) being flooded with tents, with some commentators on social media calling it an “anarchic invasion” by the campers.

Local MMEs such as evima condemn the images of “an unprecedented lack of respect for both public space and society as well as the relevant law itself” and convey the annoyance of residents who have seen one of the most beautiful spots in their area “turned into an informal… camp, with the dangers this naturally entails for public health”.

It is worth noting that the beautiful beach of the municipal unit of Kymi, with its tropical waters, was quite inaccessible until last year. As eviathema.gr reports, the road to get there was a difficult dirt road, which was not suitable for all vehicles. At regular intervals, the relevant authorities had to clean and re-pave the road, which broke down during the winter months.

However, last October a more permanent solution was found, as a significant part of the road, the most dangerous part, was paved with cement.

See the relevant post made last year by the president of the community of Vitala, Yannis Geralis, which includes both Thapsas and Tsilaros.
