The ERT journalist, who was tried for the crime of repeated domestic threats, left the Athens Autonomous Single-Member Misdemeanor Court with a 12-month prison sentence, which is redeemable at 10 euros per day.
Additional restrictive conditions were imposed on the defendant, prohibiting him from approaching or communicating with his partner, the journalist he assaulted, in any way (physically, by phone, electronically) until the final adjudication of the case.
Earlier, the prosecutor had also requested the defendant’s conviction, stating among other things: “I believe that the totality of the charges has been fully substantiated. Today, the matter is domestic threats. The court is independent, not influenced by public opinion or other factors. The crime is repeated. The victim received a barrage of calls, given what had preceded. Both victims (the journalist and the defendant’s estranged wife) felt terror and anxiety. The defendant has been threatening. We do not give weight to his testimony as he tried more to justify himself rather than speak about what he has caused to these individuals. He should be found guilty of the charges.”
