The 43-year-old’s violent past: A few days before he killed Areti, he beat her on the beach of Amphilochia

This afternoon the funeral of the 36-year-old woman - The abuse, the escalation of threats and the murder - How the best man tried to stop the perpetrator

Newsroom July 15 08:30

The local community of Amphilochia is shocked by the brutal murder of 36-year-old Areti by her estranged husband, who then committed suicide.

The autopsy to be conducted today (15/7) will show the exact cause of Areti’s death. Tragic faces are her two teenage children. Within minutes they lost both of their parents.

Residents of the area said he was terribly jealous of her and beat her up. The final act of the drama will be played out at Areti’s funeral, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Agia Paraskevi Church in Amfilochia. Her parents, her children, all those who loved her will say their last goodbye, unable to believe the evil that has happened.

Residents of the area reported that he was extremely jealous and would often beat her. The final act of this tragedy will take place at Areti’s funeral, which will be held at 5:30 PM at the Holy Church of Agia Paraskevi in Amfilochia. Her parents, children, and everyone who loved her will bid her a final farewell, still unable to comprehend the horror that has occurred.

The Godfather Tried to Stop the Perpetrator

In new revelations about the last moments of the killing in the early hours of Saturday, the couple’s godfather spoke to STAR, detailing what happened on Loutro Street in Amfilochia shortly before the 42-year-old stained his hands with the blood of 36-year-old Areti.

According to the godfather of the 42-year-old, the perpetrator turned the shotgun on him as well, threatening to kill him.

“I asked him, ‘What are you doing?'”

The godfather, who lived directly above the estranged couple, was the first to try to stop the perpetrator and eventual suicide.

“The little girl called my wife and said that her dad had come to the house with a shotgun. My wife went down to the first floor but couldn’t get into the house. A little later, we managed to get inside and saw Babis. I tried to calm him down as best I could. When Areti’s car arrived, we heard it. It stopped right in front of the door. I then told him, ‘What are you doing? Don’t do anything stupid.’ Babis jumped from the balcony onto the car, and I ran down the stairs.”

Dramatic Moments

The following minutes were dramatic. The godfather tried to stop the 43-year-old, but the perpetrator did not hesitate to turn the shotgun on him.

In his testimony, the godfather described the threat he faced: “I told him again, ‘What are you doing?’ He then pointed the gun at me and threatened me. He stood by the passenger window and fired the second shot at Areti. I then saw him go to the silver car outside the house, and seconds later, I heard the gunshot. I was stunned and ran to the police station.”

Timeline of the Crime

On that fateful night, the 43-year-old took the shotgun and went in the middle of the night to the apartment where his estranged wife lived with their daughter. The 36-year-old was not there, and their 13-year-old child was inside. The 43-year-old allegedly called his estranged wife, threatening to kill their daughter if she didn’t return home. Meanwhile, the 13-year-old informed her relatives upstairs, who took her away and locked the 43-year-old inside the house, according to reports.

When Areti returned home with her car, the 43-year-old jumped from the balcony onto the hood of the car and shot her without hesitation. He fired a second shot, killing the 36-year-old, and then turned the gun on himself.

The murderer and suicide had made his ex-wife’s life a living hell. According to reports, he had been drinking heavily and frequently appeared drunk, often behaving abusively toward his estranged wife.

The ELAS statement:

Regarding reports reproduced in the online press regarding the non-response of police officers to telephone calls made by the victim and her relatives prior to her fatal injury, the following is clarified:

The victim called the local police station citing a threat to her life from her estranged husband, and disconnected the call without providing contact and residence information, only her full name.

Officers searched digital ID and case files for further information about the caller, locating her contact phone number and residence address.

Immediately, a patrol car crew moved to her residence while making repeated calls to obtain further information and directions, however no one responded.

At the same time, the Police Department’s call records show no call from the victim’s family and friends to the local Police Department or the Rapid Response Unit to report the incident.

Any call made was for a time later than the fatal injuries and while officers had already arrived on the scene.
