The Municipality of Athens is making sweeping changes to the municipal police, following the dismantling of the extortion circle, which involved the arrested and already remanded chief of the municipal police. Specifically, the mayor of Athens today made a change in the entire management of the municipal police and municipal police departments.
Athens Mayor Haris Dukas says: “We are determined not to allow any criminal and delinquent behavior. We will show zero tolerance to instances of corruption, mismanagement, and maladministration, as well as to behaviors that undermine the work of our Municipal Authority, which aims to improve the lives of Athenians. We take every measure necessary to prevent and eliminate these phenomena, wherever they exist. We are firmly on the side of our employees, the vast majority of whom respond consistently and conscientiously to their duties.”
The Municipality of Athens has already initiated a series of actions, even before the revelation of the latest incidents, to ensure the unhindered and transparent licensing and operation of shops, as well as the control that the competent municipal services must carry out.
Among other things, in the immediate future, it is planned the universal upgrade of the information system of the Municipality, through which there will be a complete mapping of shops, the drastic change of the Regulations of shops, which will establish strict conditions for the establishment and operation and the obligation of professionals to post at the entrance of their shops QR Code, with the operating license, the exact space allocated to them for trade occupations and the relevant plan prepared by an engineer.
At the same time, the Deputy Mayor of Municipal Police and Public Spaces, Thomas Georgiades, is working on changes in the way the municipal police operate, which will extend to the overall management of complaints to quickly and effectively address potential corruption and mismanagement.
