Enhancing Accessibility: Antirrio Castle Upgrades Facilities to Better Serve Disabled Visitors

What does the Ministry of Culture's plan include

Newsroom July 22 11:06

Antirrio Castle, a significant cultural monument, will soon become universally accessible thanks to upgraded infrastructure aimed at serving the needs of disabled individuals. This initiative is being implemented by the Ministry of Culture.

The plan includes several key improvements: – Creation of an accessible tour route to the monument’s important areas – Establishment of service infrastructures accessible to all visitors – Construction of an accessible sidewalk and parking spaces near the entrance – Preservation and enhancement of the level entrance and arched portico with improved lighting – Development of public service areas, including a refreshment room and a digital information room – Installation of ramps, a guide for the blind, and modified sanitary facilities – Construction of accessible outdoor routes, both circular and central, with guide for the blind and shaded resting areas – Incorporation of special signage for the disabled, including tactile Braille signs – Creation of a lift with a wheelchair platform to provide access to the northeast bastion for panoramic viewing.

The goal is for Antirrio Castle to become a friendly and inclusive destination for both the disabled and elderly, while also serving as a venue for cultural events with a potential capacity of up to 4,500 people. These upgrades will not only enhance the monument’s accessibility but also contribute to the dynamic development of the Aitoloakarnania region, benefiting the local society and economy. Antirrio Castle, also known as ancient Molykreion, was built by Sinan Pasha on the orders of Sultan Bayezid II in the 15th century, opposite the Castle of Rio in the “Little Dardanelles” strait. The extant fort has a polygonal plan with several distinctive architectural features, though the construction phases are difficult to discern due to continuous reconstructions over time.
