Weather: North winds up to 7 Beaufort & 38 degrees Celsius today – High fire danger in many areas

Maximum temperatures above 38 °C yesterday on the mainland - The forecast for the weekend

Intensifying winds, warmth and instability in the midday and afternoon hours on the mainland, especially in the mountains, will be the main features of the weather in the coming days.

The north winds in the Aegean Sea will reach today 6 to 7 and from the weekend very probably up to 8 Beaufort, affecting also the eastern continental parts of the country. The north winds will keep the temperature at tolerable levels, while in the west, central and northern continental areas, the temperature is expected to approach 40 degrees Celsius.

High fire danger in many areas

“Yellow” alert for several areas of Greece for today, Friday (09/08) by the Fire Brigade.

According to the Risk Prediction Map, the risk level is at 3 (high risk) for Attica, Evia, Skyros, Boeotia & areas of Fthiotida, Argolida & areas of Corinthia, Evros & Rodopi, Crete, Cyclades, Dodecanese & North-Eastern islands. Aegean Sea, Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia & Ithaca.

Maximum temperatures above 38 °C yesterday on the mainland

High temperatures continued mainly in the continental areas on Thursday 08/08, as can be seen in the temperature colour scale of the map below, where according to the network of automatic weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, 128 weather stations recorded maximum temperatures above 35 °C. The highest maximum temperatures were recorded in the west and south, with the highest maximum temperature recorded in Assos Corinthia and Konitsa with 38.6 °C.

The weather today

Sunshine is forecast with a few clouds, gradually increasing during the warm hours on the mainland, with local rain or isolated thunderstorms in the mountains of the Peloponnese, Western and Central Central Central Greece, Epirus, Macedonia and possibly Thessaly. Visibility in the evening and early morning hours may be limited in places in the western parts.

The temperature will range from 20 to 36 degrees in Northern Greece (in Western Macedonia from 16 to 33 degrees), 20 to 38 degrees in Central and Southern Greece, 21 to 36 degrees in Western Greece (in Epirus from 16 to 35 degrees), 24 to 31 degrees in the Cyclades and from 20 to 33 degrees in Crete, 21 to 35 degrees in the East Aegean islands and from 25 to 31 degrees in the Dodecanese.

The winds will blow in the Aegean from northern directions moderate 4-5 Beaufort and in the Carpathian Sea strong 6 Beaufort, while in the Ionian Sea from variable directions light and from noon from northwestern directions almost moderate 4 Beaufort and in the Northern Ionian Sea moderate 5 Beaufort.

TOMORROW SATURDAY 10-08-2024
Generally clear weather with occasional clouds in the midday and afternoon hours on the mainland, when local rainfall is possible in the central and southern mountains.
Winds will blow from the north at 4 to 6 Beaufort and in the Aegean Sea locally 7 Beaufort.
The temperature will not change significantly. It will reach 35 to 37 degrees Celsius in the mainland and the Ionian islands, locally 38 degrees in the mainland, 34 to 36 degrees Celsius in the eastern Aegean islands, the Dodecanese and southern Crete and 29 to 31 degrees Celsius in the rest of the island country.

SUNDAY 11-08-2024
Generally clear weather, with occasional clouds on the mainland in the midday and afternoon hours.
Winds will blow from the north at 3 to 5 Beaufort, 6 to 7 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea.
The temperature will not change significantly. It will reach 35 to 37 degrees Celsius in the mainland, the Ionian islands, the eastern Aegean islands, the Dodecanese and southern Crete, locally 38 degrees Celsius in the mainland and 29 to 31 degrees Celsius in the rest of the island country.

The temperature will rise slightly.

Generally clear weather with occasional clouds in the midday and afternoon hours in the western and northern mainland.
Winds will blow in the west variable 2 to 4 Beaufort, in the east from the north 3 to 5 and in the Aegean Sea locally up to 6 Beaufort.
The temperature will rise slightly further.

The temperature will increase in some parts of the day, with a slight increase in temperature to +10.5°C to +10.5°C.
