White House: Positive Start to Ceasefire Talks in Gaza

"The framework of the agreement has been broadly accepted, with remaining gaps concerning its implementation" - Talks will continue tomorrow

Newsroom August 15 06:17

White House Press Secretary John Kirby today referred to a “positive start” in the talks that have just begun in Doha, focusing on achieving a ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip.

John Kirby, the spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council, mentioned that he expects the talks to continue tomorrow, adding, “We are at a point where the framework of the agreement has been broadly accepted, and the gaps that need to be filled concern its implementation.”

It should be noted that the new talks, following the invitation of mediating countries—Qatar, the U.S., and Egypt—are based on a proposal presented on May 31 by President Biden. In its first phase, it envisions a six-week truce, the withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from densely populated areas of the Gaza Strip, and the release of Hamas hostages in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli detention centers.
