“Passengers board our planes drunk,” says Ryanair CEO – “Challenging” destinations include Greece and Ibiza

Passengers should be limited to two drinks before their flight to prevent disturbances, says Michael O'Leary

Newsroom August 28 06:35

According to Michael O’Leary, the CEO of Ryanair, two drinks at the airport before a flight are sufficient for passengers, and implementing limits on alcohol consumption at airports would help address the rise in disruptive incidents on flights.

Violent outbursts occur every week due to alcohol, especially when mixed with other substances, O’Leary said, clarifying that “you have much more aggressive behavior that becomes very difficult to manage.”

Crew members and other passengers have become targets, he added, as reported by the BBC.

He noted that it is challenging for airlines to identify drunk individuals at the gate, especially when they board in groups. “As long as they can stand up, they will pass through,” he said. He also questioned why, if we don’t allow people to drive under the influence of alcohol, we continue to put them on airplanes.

Nevertheless, Ryanair staff searches bags for alcohol before passengers board flights to Ibiza, one of the most affected “party destinations.” Greek islands are also considered “challenging” destinations.

Delays before flights exacerbate the problem, he said, as they provide more time for alcohol consumption at airports.
