Crete: An 18-year-old man was arrested for trafficking 69 immigrants

The immigrants were identified by the Coast Guard on September 3 and were safely transported to the port of Chora Sfakia in Crete

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on charges of trafficking immigrants in Crete.

As it became known yesterday, September 3, in the early morning hours, the Coast Guard located and rescued 69 people of foreign origin who were on board a boat south of Gavdos.

Specifically, according to a statement, the boat was found by a cargo ship in a sea area 26 nautical miles south of Gavdos and after their rescue, the migrants were transported and safely disembarked at the port of Chora Sfakia in Crete.

However, in the afternoon of the same day, the Coast Guard in an update announced that an 18-year-old foreigner was arrested for violation of Law 3386/2005 “Illegal Entry into the country”, Law 4251/2014 “Facilitation” and Article 306 of the Penal Code “Exposure of human life in danger”.

Preliminary investigation is conducted by the Central Port Authority of Chania.
