The couple who were seriously injured on Wednesday morning when they and their two-year-old child were swept away by a 46-year-old drunk driver in the area of Thermi, in eastern Thessaloniki, is still fighting to stay alive.
According to the latest update from sources at Papageorgiou Hospital, both the 37-year-old man who was intubated, and the 34-year-old woman who is five months pregnant and also intubated, remain in a condition of serious concern. Both are expected to undergo surgical procedures when their clinical condition allows, with the 37-year-old more seriously injured.
The child, who was in the pram at the time of the drift, is being treated at the hospital’s paediatric surgery clinic and his health is considered good. According to information, the couple, permanent residents of Belgium, were in Thessaloniki, probably on holiday.
The 46-year-old man will go to the prosecutor on Thursday
In the meantime, a case has been filed against the 46-year-old driver for serial bodily harm, drunkenness and dangerous driving, with the charges likely to change depending on the condition of the injured and the outcome of the preliminary investigation conducted by the traffic police, which is currently underway.
The man, who remains in custody under a prosecutor’s order, will be brought before the judicial authorities tomorrow.
The accused allegedly spoke with his mother on the phone a few hours before the incident and informed her that he was in a beach area. A short time later he called her again and told her that he had lured three people with his car.
A characteristic of the severity of the crash is that the vehicle came to a stop when it went over the fence and ended up in trees in the backyard of a house. After the accident, the driver’s mother was found at the scene and said that she only wished the family well.
