Greece & Egypt discuss the establishment of a branch of the University of Patras in Alexandria

The next steps to be taken were discussed at a meeting between the Greek Ambassador to Egypt & the Minister of Higher Education of the country

The establishment of the University of Patras branch in Alexandria, Egypt is underway. In fact, a meeting was recently held between the Ambassador of Greece to Egypt, Nicolaos Papageorgiou, and the Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research of Egypt, Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour.

The discussion was particularly productive as regards the possibilities of expanding bilateral cooperation and the developments in the issue of the operation of a branch of the University of Patras in Alexandria.

During the recent meeting, a consensus was reached on the establishment of a branch of the University of Patras in Alexandria. The development of an action plan for the creation of joint curricula and student exchange programs was discussed.

The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Ayman Ashour, received the Ambassador of Greece in Cairo, Mr. Nikolaos Papageorgiou, at the Ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, in the presence of the Head of the Cultural Affairs and Scholarships Sector, Dr. Sherif Saleh, in order to discuss ways of developing cooperation in the field of higher education and scientific research.

Dr. Ayman Ashour, after stressing the importance of Egypt-Greece relations, pointed out the successes achieved in joint research projects in various fields and Egypt’s interest in strengthening academic cooperation between the two countries in the field of higher education and scientific research.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to strengthen this cooperation through the exchange of researchers and students and the establishment of joint curricula, which will contribute to raising the academic level of students, enhancing cultural exchanges and creating strong networks of scientific relations between the two countries.

Referring to the remarkable progress achieved in Egypt in the infrastructure sector, Dr. Ashour stressed that it has resulted in the creation of an attractive investment environment in higher education and scientific research. It is noted that branches of several international universities have already been established in the Arab Republic of Egypt, which reinforces Egypt’s position as a leading educational and investment destination.

In this context, the two sides discussed the steps to establish a branch of the Hellenic University of Patras in Alexandria, which will offer undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in the fields of engineering, arts, sociology, administration and health.

The two sides also discussed the location of the University of Patras branch in Alexandria, which will open new horizons for students and researchers within the Governorate and allow for the exchange of knowledge and expertise in various disciplines. In addition, it will enrich the cultural scene in Alexandria and strengthen the historical and cultural ties between the two countries.

For his part, the Greek Ambassador praised the depth of the strategic relations between Egypt and Greece, stressing the remarkable and rapid development in the aspects of bilateral cooperation, heralding promising prospects in the future of relations between the two countries. The two sides also stressed the importance of strengthening the strategic partnership between Egypt and Greece in the academic sector. They also agreed to develop a clear roadmap to strengthen cooperation, including the launch of joint research and student exchange programmes.

The Rector of the University of Patras, Professor Christos I. Bouras, said. This important initiative of the University of Patras, under the leadership of the Vice Rector Prof. Prof. Dr. Dr. Alekhine, has been approved by the University of Patras. D. Mantzavinou, is part of the extroversion and internationalization of the Institution and undoubtedly constitutes a historic moment at national level, with political and academic importance, since it implies the creation of the first branch of a Greek University abroad. We will make every effort to make this branch an attractive academic destination for both international and Egyptian students.
