Russian armed forces launched waves of drones against Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, in the early hours of the morning, with air defense systems activated to fend them off, the Ukrainian military announced.
Several explosions were heard, believed to be caused by air defense systems shooting down the drones, and Reuters journalists reported seeing targets being hit in the skies above Kyiv.
Kyiv, its surrounding region, and most of eastern Ukraine were placed under air raid alert from 1:00 AM (local and Greek time).
“Enemy UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) are over the capital and nearby,” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said via Telegram.
Earlier, the Ukrainian air force had reported that groups of Russian assault drones were moving towards the capital and western regions. They also mentioned guided bombs being dropped from Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine around 4:40 AM.
No damage or casualties have been reported at this time.
Moscow has not commented.
In September, Russian armed forces repeatedly launched raids on Kyiv and other areas, primarily targeting energy, military, and transportation infrastructure. Dozens of civilians have been killed in these attacks, according to Ukrainian authorities.
