Recently, in a lively ceremony at the Gennadius Library, the Fulbright program in Greece celebrated the welcoming of American scholars and the return of Greek scientists who had studied in the U.S. The event, attended by the Minister of Education, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, and U.S. Ambassador to Greece, George Tsunis, underscored the longstanding educational and cultural bridge between the two countries.

Minister Pierrakakis emphasized the strategic and existential nature of U.S.-Greek relations, highlighting three key historical milestones: Greek migration to America in the early 20th century, American support post-World War II via the Marshall Plan and Truman Doctrine, and the critical role of academic exchanges, with Fulbright being a pivotal player.

Ambassador Tsunis reflected on his immigrant background, crediting education for his success. He lauded the Fulbright scholars, describing education as the foundation for opportunity, and stressed the importance of equal access to education for all, regardless of background. Tsunis also praised the head of Fulbright Greece, Artemis Zenetou, for her exceptional leadership, particularly during Greece’s financial crisis.

Zenetou reaffirmed Fulbright’s commitment to academic excellence, diversity, and inclusion. She also announced a new collaboration with the Greek State Scholarships Foundation (IKY), offering U.S. doctoral students short-term research opportunities in Greece and vice versa.

This event marks another step in the continued growth of academic exchanges between Greece and the U.S., fostering mutual understanding and collaboration.
