The Coast Guard’s Statement

In the late hours of yesterday, an L.S.-EL.AKT. patrol boat (PPA), which was conducting a scheduled patrol, was informed that a suspicious vessel, without navigation lights, was moving at high speed towards the coast in the area of Agios Fokas n. Kos.

The VTS spotted a wind-powered speedboat (T/X) with a sufficient number of occupants and made use of light and sound signals, to which the pilot of the speedboat did not comply.

Instead, he performed abrupt and dangerous maneuvers at high speed, resulting in loss of control and a sufficient number of occupants in the sea and the vessel being immobilized.

Two (02) members of the crew of the PPS went overboard to rescue the persons, while the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Centre of the L.S.-E.L.A.C.T. was informed.

A total of ten (10) persons were recovered from the sea, of which four (2 women and 2 children) were unconscious. Immediately they were provided first aid using CPR, while three (03) more vessels and one (01) private boat were dispatched to assist.

Twenty-one (21) persons were safely transferred from the T/X boat to a patrol boat of the L.S.-EΛ.AKT.

In total, twenty-seven (27) rescued persons were transferred to the port of Kos and handed over to the Port Authority officials. Five children and an infant were transferred for precautionary reasons to the General Hospital of Kos, where they were examined and found to be in good health. Twenty-six foreigners (14 men, 4 women, and 8 minors) were transferred by members of the Hellenic Police to the Reception and Identification Centre (KYT) of Kos.

According to the statement of the rescued persons, there are no missing persons and the total number of passengers was thirty foreigners and their traffickers, while the searches continued by two (02) PPAs. The Port Authority of Kos, which is conducting the preliminary investigation, seized the transport boat.
