Remote monitoring prevented a suburban train from mistakenly entering a metro line at Doukissis Plakentias. The incident occurred on October 9 and was confirmed by OSE’s CEO, Panagiotis Terezakis, following a report by the Panhellenic Union of Railway Drivers (PEPE).

According to Terezakis, the error was made by the stationmaster, who has since been removed for retraining. The station master gave the wrong signal, and as a result, the suburban train was on the verge of entering the metro tunnel, approximately 500 meters before the tunnel’s entrance.

Terezakis explained that the driver ignored two signals warning that the train was entering a metro line, failing to stop in time, which is now under investigation. The error was ultimately caught by the remote monitoring system, which prevented the potential accident.

Further investigation will determine if and how the stationmaster will continue after retraining. The system detected the error through a sensor that triggered an alert, stopping the suburban train from continuing on the wrong track.
