A “small miracle” is taking place 35 meters below one of the busiest areas of downtown Athens, Kolonaki. Behind the green-decorated protective metal sheets of the construction site, in one of the most emblematic areas of the city center, one of the most important projects for Athens is taking place. The “Kolonaki station” of Line 4 of the Athens Metro.
The “Athens Central Railway Station” of Athens, which is the first stop of the “Athens Central Railway Station”.
The construction site of ABAX at the Kolonaki Square station is revealed to the APPE-MPA. Company officials say it is one of 15 stations on Line 4, the largest public project currently underway in the country. Line 4 starts from Katehaki and passes through Zografou, Kaisariani, Kolonaki, Exarchia, Evelpidon Courthouse, and Kypseli, it reaches Galatzi and Also Veikou.
The X-ray of the station “Kolonaki”
Today, the ABAX Group’s excavation has reached 28 meters, while the final excavation depth will reach 35 meters. The area of the pit exceeds 2,000 square meters, while the area of the construction site is four acres. That is, the volume of excavation is equivalent to eight 10-storey apartment buildings!
35 workers are working on this large excavation of Kolonaki, while the work is “supervised” from a height of 45 meters by the familiar to the visitors of Kolonaki construction crane.
According to ABAX, up to 500 cubic meters of soil is being removed every day, and by the end of the work, 68,000 cubic meters of soil will have been removed. To date, 53,000 cubic meters have been removed. Kolonaki station will be connected by a tunnel that will pass under Lines 2 and 3, which are already in operation.
Intensification of work from the first moment of delivery
After the so-called precursor works, the contractor consortium’s mechanism went to work last April at Kolonaki Square. Despite the fact that the station was delivered to ABAX, ten months after the scheduled date, the lost time has almost been made up and the speed of progress of the project is impressive. Appeals and other pending issues are the reason why 6 of the 15 construction sites, where an equal number of stations will be built, have not been handed over to the consortium constructing the project.
Works on Line 4 continue at a steady pace
Tunnel boring and construction is running at a very satisfactory pace, according to the same officials. The two state-of-the-art ABAX metropolis will have completed 12.8 km of the route by 2026, which will be a breath of fresh air for areas with dense population and major traffic issues, such as Galatssi, Kypseli, Akadimias, and Kolonaki.
The Metropolitan that started from Katehaki has already constructed a 2 km tunnel, 40% of the 5.1 km it has to travel in total until the junction of Evangelismos, where it will meet the second Metropolitan that follows the opposite route, from Also Vekou to Evangelismos.
