New identity card issuance: Citizens can apply anywhere, without residency restrictions

How to make an appointment - The procedure in detail

Newsroom October 23 04:09

To provide better, better, and faster service to citizens, the Ministry of Citizen Protection has made changes to the procedure for issuing Identity Cards.

In particular, by the decision of the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michael Chrysochoidis, citizens now can submit the documents for the issuance of a new identity card to the competent Security Services, regardless of their place of residence. The authority to issue ID cards is no longer limited to the local level.

Security services, such as the Security Departments for the regions of the Security Directorate of Attica and Thessaloniki, as well as the Sub-Directorates and Security Departments in the rest of the country, will serve all citizens.

Where no such Services exist, identity cards will be issued by the Police Department which exercises security responsibilities in the area of its jurisdiction and, where neither exists, cards will be issued by the Police Sub-Directorate based in that area.

As noted in the ministry’s announcement, “this new regulation seeks to provide optimal and more flexible service to citizens, ensuring promptness in the provision of services.”

Specifically, it is achieved:

1. Flexibility: Citizens can choose any competent police authority for the submission of documents and the issuance of the new Identity Card, regardless of their place of residence.

2. They can be located wherever they want, regardless of their place of residence: The process is simplified and becomes faster, reducing delays and waiting, and facilitating service in different areas.

Reduction of time and costs.
3. Simplification: The citizen no longer needs to search for the local competent authority, as any appropriate agency can process the request.

No need to look for a local authority to locate the relevant authority.
4. Reduction of bureaucracy: With the new regulation, procedures are accelerated and bureaucracy is simplified, offering a more direct and easy service.

The process is faster and more convenient, making it easier and more convenient.
The Ministry of Citizen Protection remains always at the disposal of citizens to improve their daily life and enhance their security.

It is reminded that citizens can in a simple and friendly way schedule digital appointments through the id.gov.gr. a platform for the issuance of a new type of identity card or its replacement due to change of data, expiration, wear, or obsolescence.

The platform was implemented by the General Secretariat for Information Systems and Digital Governance of the Ministry of Digital Governance and citizens can log in using their Taxisnet codes.

Through the id.gov.gr platform, it is ensured that the time interval between the appointments of the interested parties for the same Identity Card Issuing Authority is maintained, sufficient to complete one appointment before starting the next one.

The procedure for scheduling an appointment is detailed:

– The citizen selects in his/her application, any Issuing Authority he/she wishes regardless of his/her place of residence or stay, a specific day and time from the availability list, to be served by physical presence. His/her details are automatically extracted from the Citizens’ Register and the National Communication Register (EMEP). In case he/she does not have his/her details updated in EMEP, he/she will have to either update them on the spot or complete them by declaration.

– Also, he/she can also make a request for an appointment using the same procedure on behalf of his/her minor children over the age of 12 years.

– Upon completion of the request, he or she receives an email with basic information about the appointment process, as well as the contact information for the Issuing Authority he or she has selected.

– The appointment scheduling request may be rescheduled canceled or resubmitted no later than one (1) hour prior to the start of the scheduled appointment.

– At various intervals before the start of the scheduled appointment, the interested party shall receive a reminder message from the platform to the email address provided.

It is worth noting that especially in case of loss or theft of the Identity Card, the citizen should contact (by phone or email) the competent Issuing Authority and request the scheduling of an appointment for the issuance of a new Identity Card.

Finally, natural persons can schedule an appointment for themselves and on behalf of third persons for the issuance or replacement of a new type of ID card, except in special cases (loss, theft, damage) and through the C.I.P.s.
