Thriller with the deaths of infants in Amaliada: Authorities reopen cases seeking answers

Authorities are trying to determine what exactly happened with the deaths of four infants in Amaliada, involving the 24-year-old Irene, through testimonies and laboratory tests

Newsroom October 24 07:57

The genetic testing for one of Irene’s two children was completed yesterday, revealing that the 19-day-old infant did not have any genetic issues. Regarding the second child, who passed away at the age of two months, reports indicate that the genetic test requires further investigation.

An order for an investigation into the case has been issued by the head of the Patras Appeals Prosecutor’s Office. As part of this, the authorities are expected to examine the information contained in the death files of the children, and it is likely that testimonies will be taken from individuals who knew the children and their parents.

It is recalled that the first child of the 24-year-old, a girl just 19 days old, died on June 19, 2022. The second girl, aged two months, passed away on October 17, 2023. On August 5, 2024, the 15-month-old boy of the 24-year-old’s best friend, with whom she lived, also died. The fourth allegation concerns another friend’s child, who died in 2021.

Notably, ten years ago, the 24-year-old’s younger sister also died suddenly at a few months old, and the details surrounding her death remain unclear.

For this case, “The Smile of the Child” organization issued a statement regarding the information that had reached them about the 24-year-old woman. According to the organization, “it was evident that the 24-year-old was in a vulnerable family environment from her childhood, as well as regarding the support she received in her role as a new mother.”

It should be noted that yesterday, Wednesday (October 23), the 24-year-old Irene voluntarily appeared at the Amaliada Security Department, requesting to provide a supplementary statement.

Specifically, Irene asked to give additional testimony regarding the death of her friend’s infant, who lived with her and passed away on August 5, 2024. Reports indicate that she stated that her previous testimony still stands.

“I want to emphasize that when the ambulance from the EKAB that we called arrived, the baby was alive. How could I have done something to it that would cause its death? It was alive,” she notably stated.
